LONG BEACH, Calif. - Women's water polo head coach Gavin Arroyo announced that six future 49ers have signed National Letters Of Intent to play at Long Beach State. The class will join the 49ers squad for the 2015 season consists of Sydney Kohlenberger, Alex Massier, Mari Ranj, Shelby Rascon, Bridget Reynolds and Virginia Smith.
The 49ers are building off a historic 2013 season that saw them go 25-7 and jump all the way up to eighth in final Collegiate Water Polo Association poll. Long Beach State began the season unranked but received votes.
Kohlenberger comes to the Beach from a successful Newport Harbor High School program. The 5-5 attacker has lettered in both water polo and swimming for the Sailors. She helped the Sailors' water polo team to a Sunset League and a CIF title in 2012. Last year, she helped the team to a runner-up finish in the CIF.
Massier will make her way to the Beach all the way from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. She will bring with her a positive experience from international competition. Massier, a defender, earned a spot on the Youth Canadian National Team last summer and competed at the Junior Pan American Games in Argentina. Massier's Canadian team came away with the silver medal. She also helped her Team Saskatchewan club team to a second-place finish in at the U22 Nationals.
Ranj is another attacker out of Westview High School in San Diego, Calif. She is already a decorated attacker at Westview and will earn her fourth varsity letter this spring. Going into her senior season, Ranj already owns the school record for assists in a career and the single season assists record. She is also fourth in career goals and third in career steals. She earned a spot on the All-Palomar League First Team as a sophomore and a junior and was Second Team All-CIF as a junior.
Rascon is an attacker out of El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif. Last year, she earned All-South Coast League Second Team honors after helping El Toro to the South Coast League title. She also helped the team reach the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section tournament.
Reynolds is a two-sport athlete in swimming and water polo at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. The 5-7 attacker has helped the Grizzlies' water polo team to three consecutive Baseline League titles and a CIF title last year. She distributed 59 assists and had 84 steals in 2013 to earn All-Baseline First Team, All-CIF Second Team and All-American Honorable Mention honors. She was also part of the league champion swim team in 2012.
Smith will also come to the Beach from Canada but comes from Maple Ridge, British Columbia. She played with fellow signee Massier on the Youth Canadian National Team last summer. The pair helped Team Canada to silver medal in the Junior Pan American Games in Argentina. Smith also plays for the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club.
All six recruits will join the 49ers for the 2015 season. The 2014 season will begin at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament on Jan. 25.
