
Beach tennis loses heartbreaker 4-3 in final set

Long Beach, Calif. - It came down to one final set after Klaudia Malenoska sent the deciding match to a third set after a comeback in the second set at No. 4 singles, but No. 36 UNLV's Manon de Lanleay held off the junior in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 win for the Rebels, that allowed the hosts to defeat No. 47 Long Beach State 4-3.
Long Beach State got off to a hot start by winning all three doubles matches against the Rebels. Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar stayed unbeaten on the weekend, winning 8-2 over Bourchier/Ferenczi-Bako, while Rachel Manasse and Laura Bernard grabbed the point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Josifoska and Pavlovic. Anais Dallara and Malenovska then completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Lucia Batta and de Lanleay.
In singles, the 49ers moved ahead 2-0 after Cantlay came away with a big win at No. 6, defeating Ella Bourchier 6-2, 6-2, but the 49ers dropped two matches up top as No. 50 Lucia Batta defeated Anais Dallara 7-6, 6-0, and Aleksandra Josifoska defeated Manasse 6-3, 6-2 to even the score.
Laura Bernard picked up the 49ers third point at No. 3 singles, defeating Nives Pavlovic 6-4, 7-6 to bring the 49ers within one point of the win. However, Luzar lost in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 tying the match at 3-3 setting up the final set showdown between Malenovska and de Lanleay.
Long Beach State's time in Las Vegas concludes Sunday, when the 49ers face No. 39 Utah in the team's last match of the weekend at 10 a.m.
