De Gaetano and Jones-Wesley earn Big West weekly awards

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Erin Jones-Wesley has been named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, while sophomore Hannah De Gaetano has earned Big West Player of the Week honors. Jones-Wesley's award is the eighth of her career, and her second this season, while De Gaetano claimed her first career award.
Jones-Wesley (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) picked up both of Long Beach State's wins at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., to run her record to 5-1. She finished the weekend with a 1.11 ERA, allowing just six earned runs in 38 innings pitched. She struck out 14 opposing batters in three games. Jones-Wesley pitched a pair of complete games, getting wins over Indiana and Memphis. In the Indiana game, she held the Hoosiers to three runs (two earned) on five hits in a five-inning win. The reigning Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year beat Memphis allowing just three hits in seven innings. She gave up just one unearned run and struck out eight. Jones-Wesley took the loss against Portland State, but didn't allow any earned runs.
De Gaetano (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS) batted .500 with two home runs and five RBI in the tournament. She had hits in four of LBSU's five games, including multiple hits in the first three. De Gaetano opened the weekend going 3-for-3 against Indiana with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. She followed that effort with a 2-for-3 effort against Texas Tech, before going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles against Memphis. De Gaetano went 1-for-4 with her fourth career home run and an RBI against Ohio State. For the tournament, she finished with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .529 on base percentage.
Jones-Wesley and De Gaetano will lead Long Beach State (5-5) into the Cathedral City Classic this week where the 49ers will play five games. LBSU meets Fordham and Colorado State on Thursday, Stanford on Saturday, and Long Island and Arizona on Sunday.
