49ers sweep Big West Conference softball weekly awards

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Erin Jones-Wesley has been named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, while freshman Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi has earned Big West Player of the Week honors. Jones-Wesley's award is the seventh of her career, while Tupua-Tautalatasi claimed her first award after the first week of her career.
Jones-Wesley (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) pitched three complete games at the Fresno State Tournament last weekend, going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA. She allowed just four earned runs in 22 innings, while striking out 24. She opened the tournament on Friday with a 4-2 win over Sacramento State. She gave up two runs in seven innings against the Hornets, while tying her career high with 11 strikeouts. Jones-Wesley beat Toledo 5-1 on Saturday, allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings. She struck out nine Rockets' batters while walking just two. She finished the tournament on Sunday with an eight-inning, 4-1, complete game win over Fresno State. Jones-Wesley allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out four against the Bulldogs.
Tupua-Tautalatasi (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) batted .368 with a home run and two RBI, while finishing with a .632 slugging percentage. She had hits in four of Long Beach State's five games, including multiple hits three times. She opened the tournament with a 1-for-4 effort with a run scored in the win over Sacramento State. In Saturday's two games, she went 4-for-8 with a triple, a RBI and a run scored. She started the day with a 2-for-5 effort in a win over Toledo and then went 2-for-3 in a loss to North Dakota State. In Sunday's win over Fresno State, Tupua-Tautalatasi went 2-for-3 with her first career home run in a 4-1 extra-inning win.
Jones-Wesley and Tupua-Tautalatasi will lead Long Beach State (3-2) into the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic this weekend where the 49ers will play five games. LBSU meets Indiana and Texas Tech on Friday, Memphis and Ohio State on Saturday, and Portland State on Sunday.
