FIRST RUN
The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams will travel over 1,900 miles to the state of Minnesota to take part in the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 10:20 a.m. (PST), while the men's 8K meet will begin at 11:10 a.m. (PST). Both races will take place at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. The men's race will feature 26 teams, while the women's competition will feature 30 teams.
DEL TORO TAKES THIRD AT IRVINE INVITATIONAL
Senior Rosa Del Toro(Van Nuys) continued with another strong performance as she finished in third-place in the women's 5,000-meter race at the UC Irvine Invitational. Del Toro crossed the finish line with a time of 17:32.3, leading the women's team to third with 106 points.
49ER MEN IN USTFCCCA REGIONAL RANKINGS
In the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings, the Long Beach State men's cross country team comes in at No. 11, while the women's team dropped out of the west region poll.
REEDY WINS FULLERTON SEASON OPENER, MEN TAKES TEAM TITLE
Sophomore Heath Reedy(Clovis) was the top runner at the Asics Fullerton Season Opener on Sept. 3, recording his first career win. Reedy covered the 8K course at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea in a time of 25:08.4, outdistancing the rest of the pack by 11 seconds. The men's team claimed the team title recording 25 points as four other 49ers finished in the top 10. This was the first team title for the men's squad since winning the Bronco Invitational in 2009.
DEL TORO RUNS TO VICTORY AT FULLERTON OPENER, WOMEN CLAIMS SECOND
Rosa Del Tororecorded her second career race title as she ran to first-place at the Asics Fullerton Season Opener on Sept. 3. Del Toro won the women's 6K event by five seconds recording a time of 22:03.7. Del Toro led the women's team to a second-place finish, tallying 61 points as three 49ers placed in the top 20.
DEL TORO, REEDY NAMED BIG WEST ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The 49ers swept the first weekly athlete of the week awards handed out by the Big West Conference as senior Rosa Del Toro and sophomore Heath Reedywere named cross country athletes of the week. This was Reedy's first athlete of the week award, while this was Del Toro's third in her career as she was nominated twice last season.
WOMEN FINISH THIRD, MEN FOURTH AT BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Long Beach State women's cross country team finished in third-place in the 6,000-meter race, recording 72 points, while the men's team placed fourth in the 8,000-meter meet, tallying 76 points, just 12 points from first-place. It was the highest finish for both teams as the women placed second in 2006 and the men finishing fourth in 2007. Senior Rosa Del Toro was the top runner for the women, crossing the finish line in ninth with a personal-best of 20:56.6. Senior Matt Maldonadopaced the men's team with a fourth-place finish with a time of 24:27.2.
DEL TORO BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 6K
Senior Rosa Del Toro broke the school record in last year's 6,000-meter race at the NCAA West Regional in Springfield, Ore., finishing in 26th with a time of 20:45.51. Her time passed Meredith Kramon's time of 20:52 set in 2007 at the West Regional in Palo Alto. Del Toro's finish was only 44 seconds off the winning pace set by NCAA All-American Jordan Hassay of Oregon. It was also a course record, passing Sarah Apgar'stime of 21:14 set in 2007.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
The 49ers will next be in action as they travel to Northern California for the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Oct. 15 at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale.
