LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's basketball and men's cross country teams have earned Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The two 49er programs received the honor for scoring in the top 10 percent nationally for their respective sport in the latest multi-year APR scores.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.
The NCAA honored a total of 909 teams for their high marks academically, which represents 14 percent of the 6,385 eligible Division I teams. The list included 525 women's teams and 384 men's or mixed squads.
The multi-year APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the ones receiving public recognition, will be announced May 24.
