BEAUMONT, Calif. - After completing the first two rounds of the Braveheart Classic and finishing in sixth-place, the Long Beach State men's golf team made a remarkable comeback on the final day shooting a tournament best 277 to claim the team championship at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.
This was the first tournament victory for the 49ers since winning the 2004 Big West Conference Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita.
LBSU completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a total score of 6-over 870, winning by two-strokes over second-place Loyola Marymount (+8) and seven shots over Saint Mary's (+13). UC Santa Barbara finished in fourth at 15-over and Sacramento State rounded out the top-five at 17-over.
Junior Kevin Roy and sophomore Philip Chian led the way for the 49ers, finishing in the top 10. After shooting a 74 in the second round by both players, Roy improved by five-strokes firing a 69, tying for fourth to finish at even 216, while Chian recorded a tournament low 67, finishing one-shot behind at 1-over 217, tying for seventh.
Sophomores Benjamin Lein and Kevin Lim also recorded their best round of the tournament, with Lein improving by four shots from the second round to card a 71, tying for 12th at 3-over 219. Lim was also four strokes better from Monday's afternoon round, posting a 2-under 70 to tie for 26th, finishing at 8-over 224.
Sophomore Raymond Ho rounded out the top five for LBSU with an 82, tying for 67th at 19-over 235.
Jake Sarnoff of Loyola Marymount won individual medalist by three shots over Anders Engell of Saint Mary's.
"It was obviously huge to get our first win of the year and first win in seven years," said 49er head coach Ryan Ressa. "We needed some momentum going into the conference tournament and give our guys a boost. We've been talking a lot the last couple of weeks about our confidence and what it takes to win tournaments. These guys came out today focused after not playing well yesterday. No one shot under par for the first two rounds and sitting 11 shots back. I told these guys last night that we need to go out and get this win and not let up. They were playing to win and that's what they did."
The 49ers return to action, May 2-3, for the Big West Conference Championships at Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo.
