49ers sweep Canisius in softball doubleheader

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Erin Jones-Wesley and senior Taylor Petty threw back-to-back complete game shutouts to lead Long Beach State to a doubleheader sweep of Canisius on Friday at the 49er Softball Complex. The 49ers won both games 4-0.
The two pitchers combined to allow just six hits while striking out 11 in the doubleheader. Sophomore Bree Stephan led the 49ers' offense with three hits in the two games, while senior Liz Javier, sophomore Caitrin DeBaun and freshman Dana Garcia each had two hits. Long Beach State moves to 22-10 on the season, while Canisius falls to 10-8.
The 49ers open Big West Conference play next weekend at Pacific with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
Game 1: Long Beach State 4, Canisius 0
Jones-Wesley had her sixth shutout and 11th complete game of the season to lead the 49ers to a 4-0 win over the Griffins. Jones-Wesley (11-3) allowed just five hits while striking out four.
Javier put the 49ers on top in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Stephan. LBSU got back-to-back one-out hits from Stephan and Hannah De Gaetano and a walk by Nalani St. Germain to set up Javier.
The 49ers added to their lead in the bottom of the second. Stephan delivered a two-out RBI single to center scoring freshman catcher Karli Sandoval from second. Long Beach State extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of home runs. St. Germain and Javier hit back-to-back one-out home runs. St. Germain's was her team-leading sixth of the season and the 14th of her career, good for fifth on the all-time LBSU career home run list. Javier's was her second of the season.
Javier finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Stephan went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 2: Long Beach State 4, Canisius 0
Petty held Canisius to one hit over seven innings in pitching the 49ers to a sweep of the doubleheader. Petty (4-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a double to Valorie Nappo. She struck out seven Griffins hitters.
The 49ers took an early lead in the first innings for the second straight game. St. Germain drove in the first run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right center scoring Stephan who led off the inning with a base hit. Megan Denio, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
The 49ers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Stephan and a bases loaded walk by De Gaetano.
Garcia went 2-for-3 to lead the 49ers.
