Long Beach, Calif. - Junior defender Krizia Cerda was named the Big West Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office today. Cerda becomes the first women's water polo player to earn Big West Player of the Week honors since 2005.
Cerda, who scored five goals against the Women's of Troy, led the 49ers to their best chance in four years to toppling USC for the first time in the history of the program. Her five goals also tied a career-high for the junior, who is the second-most prolific active scorer in the program.
With her selection, Cerda becomes just the sixth Long beach State player ever to receive Player of the Week awards, joining Amanda Wightman as a one-time winner. Cerda is also the first 49er to earn the honor since Cassie Azevedo in 2005.
Long Beach State hits the road this weekend for four matches at the UC Irvine Invitational. The 49ers start play on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 12:45 p.m. against No. 6 LMU. The 49ers will play three other games over the course of the weekend, one more on the 26th and two on Sunday, Feb. 27.
