Fullerton, Calif. - Long Beach State got off to a perfect start at the Fullerton Invitational, winning nine out of nine matches and seeing all six 49ers participating stay alive in the main draw in both doubles and singles at the Fullerton Invitational on Friday.
Since two Long Beach State teams received first-round byes in doubles, Karolina Rozenberg and Anna Jeczmionka were the only duo to participate and had a short day. Leading 5-0 in their match against Ryma Korab and BreJohn McCrary, the Matadors were forced to retire, giving the LBSU pair the win to advance to the Round of 16 which begins on Saturday.
Two 49ers were forced to play two singles matches on Friday, but both Rozenberg and Julie Luzar won both of their matches. Rozenberg beat Cal State Fullerton's Malorie dela Cruz 6-1, 6-3 before advancing over Kate Bergeson of UC Riverside 6-3, 6-1. Luzar's win in the Round of 64 came against Trudie du Toit of Oregon, winning 6-4, 6-1 before toppong Courtney Pattugalan of UC Riverside 6-2, 6-2.
With Korab's retirement continuing, Sarah Cantlay's first match of the day was scratched and the junior dominated in her second match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Concordia's Ellie Johnson. Taking that same court an hour later, senior Rachel Manasse matched the feat, also not losing a game over UC Irivne's Anna Tatsuno in a 6-0, 6-0 win, defending her No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Jeczmionka also had a first-round bye and used it, beating UCLA's Morgan Thomas 7-5, 6-1 to reach the Round of 16, while freshman Laura Bernard had the toughest fight of the day, coming back from a first set loss to UC Irvine's Kat Facey to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Both the singles and doubles draws are set to complete two full rounds on Saturday. The 49ers are staggered as so that with wins, they won't be forced to play each other until the semifinals in doubles and the quarterfinals in singles.
