LONG BEACH - Senior Rosa Del Toro was named Long Beach State Student-Athlete of the Week for her record-breaking performance this past Saturday at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif.
The Van Nuys native crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 17:09.8, setting a school record and a personal-best in the 5,000-meters by five seconds that was previously held by Sarah Apgar (17:14) in 2009 at the Bronco Invitational. Del Toro finished 14 seconds behind race winner Hannah Kiser of Idaho.
Del Toro led the women's team to their second consecutive Bronco Invitational team championship as the 49ers collected 94 points. With the win, LBSU finished ahead of five teams that were ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women's West Region poll. California was the highest ranked team as the Golden Bears came in at No. 3, followed by Portland (8th), UC Davis (9th), Cal Poly (10th) and Idaho (13th).
This was Del Toro's third top-10 finish this season and sixth overall. She captured her second career title as she won the Fullerton Season Opener, placed third at the UC Irvine Invitational and finished in 30th at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota.
