Dirtbags fall in series finale with Washington

Long Beach, Calif. - The Dirtbags struck first taking a 2-0 lead but lost the lead an a late rally fell short in a 6-4 loss to Washington. TJ Mittlesteadt was 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Long Beach State.
Devin Lohman got the Dirtbags started in the bottom of the first with a two-out double, and then scored on an RBI triple from Steve Tinoco. Tinoco then scored on a passed ball by Miles Kizer to give Long Beach State a 2-0 lead.
Washington got on the board in the second with a solo home run from Caleb Brown, and an RBI single from Bradley Boyer tied up the game at 2-2 in the third. The real damage from the Huskies came in the fifth inning, as Washington touched up starter Branden Pinder for three runs. Pinder started the inning by giving up a single, and after a hit batter a single from Julien Pollard put the Huskies on top 3-2. The Dirtbags got a second out, but a double from Troy Scott brought home two more runs for Washington.
Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, Long Beach State mounted a two-out rally after Steve Tinoco reached on an error. Matt Duffy followed with his first hit of the season, a double to left center, and Mittelstaedt cracked a ball off of the wall in right field for a double, scoring two runs, but a groundout on a nice defensive play from Huskies shortstop David Bentrott cut the comeback short.
Washington closer Adam Cimber earned a save with a scoreless ninth, and Andrew Kittredge got the win after 7.2 innings with seven hits allowed and 10 strikeouts.
Long Beach State returns to Blair Field Tuesday when the Dirtbags host San Diego State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
