49ers net solid performances at Cal-Nevada Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Long Beach State track and field team had 11 athletes score with top eight finishes on the first day of the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

Sam Jeter led the men with a first-place performance in the 400-meter hurdle prelims as he clocked in with a lifetime-best 52.16. Kenneth Medwood wasn't far behind in third, notching a Big West qualifying mark of 52.56. Both Jeter and Medwood will compete in the finals on Sunday.

Nimrod Piggee also advanced to tomorrow's 110m hurdle finals with a sixth-place showing (14.56) in the preliminary round.

Nick Kelley bettered his top 5000m time by nearly a minute as he had a runner-up finish with a mark of 14:37.50.

Richard Crawford added a lifetime-best and conference qualifying mark of 21.94 in the 200-meter dash, while Jonathan Evans also had a season-low 1:53.95 in the 800m.

Over in the field events, The Beach had three scorers in the high jump. Alex Black led the way with a runner-up performance, clearing 6-08.75, while Kevin Jenkins (6-06.75) and Nicholas Armstrong (6-04.75) claimed sixth and seventh, respectively.

Danny Bang led a trio of 49ers in the long jump, taking third overall with a personal-record 23-00.50. Medwood also scored for LBSU with a fourth-place finish (22-10.50).

On the women's side, Randi Hicks won the javelin with a toss of 155-06, while Alex Shaw came in fifth at 138-03. Rebecca Hamilton added a lifetime-best 120-05.

Jessica Barnard also advanced to the 800-meter finals as she took eighth with a Big West qualifying time of 2:15.04.

Long Beach State closes out the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium on Sunday, March 28.

STANFORD, Calif. - Two 49ers also competed at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, wrapping up a successful showing at the two-day meet.

Raul Arcos, who nabbed a Big West qualifying mark in the 1500-meter run on Friday, took 10th in his section in the 800m, clocking in at 1:55.66.

Stephanie Glick also placed ninth in the triple jump, leaping a season-long 35-06.50.
