Across The Way
Long Beach State heads to rival UC Irvine for the third annual UC Irvine Tournament this weekend. Featuring the top 14 teams in the country, the tournament will provide a solid test for the 49ers as well as the rest of the participants. The 49ers open action on Saturday, facing a rematch with UCLA in their opening game at 10:30 a.m. Following that game, the team is guaranteed three other games through the tournament, which runs through Sunday.
Swimming San Diego
.Long Beach State played their first tournament two weeks ago, participating in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 7-8. The Beach started things out with a convincing 11-7 win over Hartwick before falling in sudden death, a 9-8 overtime thriller with LMU. On day two, the 49ers continued their success by defeating the host Tritons 9-4 before falling to UC Irvine in the final, 10-7.
Opening Up
In the season opener, Long Beach State welcomed No. 3 UCLA to the Campus Pool on a chilly night with rain, but were unable to keep pace with the Bruins in a 13-4 loss. Kristen Stragier made a number of strong saves in the contest, and the 49ers featured balanced scoring in the loss, but four goals from center Tanya Gandy allowed UCLA to come away with the win.
Warm Welcomes
The Beach had a great turnout for their first exhibition of the year, as the current 49er squad defeated the Alumnae 5-3. Lauren Sieprath scored two second quarter goals to stake the 49ers to a 4-1 lead as part of the second-team. First-year head coach Gavin Arroyo used the scrimmage as a chance to experiment with the lineup, using most of the squad at some point in the match.
