San Diego - The Long Beach State women's cross country team finished in ninth place at the 64th annual Aztec Invitational in Balboa Park. Paced by senior Sarah Apgar, the 49ers accumulated a total of 236 points on Saturday morning. Apgar, crossed the finish line in eighth with a time of 18:02, besting her previous mark of 18:18 (30th) at last year's meet.

Two other 49ers finished in the Top 25 as fellow seniors Carly Harris finished in 19th place with a time of 18:32 and Kristina Wilson came in 23rd with a mark of 18:38. Both runners eclipsed their previous mark from last year as Harris crossed the finish line in 32nd, with a time of 19:01 and Wilson came in 66th at 19:14.

Rounding out the veterans, Missy Barclay, Cheryl Bube and Melissa Velasquez finished with times of 19:45, 20:52 and 21:14. The 49ers were also paced by four freshman of Stacey Flores (19:56), Alisia Barajas (20:04), Kim Sherman (20:16) and Jessica Barnard (21:00).

"I was really impressed with our three senior runners for our women's team," said distance coach Patrick Cunniff. "I think if we can have a few more runners that can step it up a notch then our women's squad will be in a position of really where we want it to be."

On the men's side, the 49ers finished in 14th place with 356 points. Freshman Bret Hasvold paced The Beach as he finished in 72nd with a time of 26:35. Fellow freshman Matt Maldonado crossed the finish line in 80th with a mark of 26:45, while sophomore Steven DeCastro came in two seconds behind in 83rd.

Mark Thomas and Raul Arcos rounded out the top five for The Beach as they recorded times of 26:51 and 26:59 respectively. Josh Ruff and Nick Kelley posted marks of 27:06 and 27:33.

"I know our men's team was disappointed with their results today," said Cunniff. "They're a young team that knows what their capable of doing and I believe that they'll only get better as the season progresses."

The 49ers are back in action as they travel up to Northern California as they take part in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday, Sept. 27.
