49ers Travel Down To San Diego For Aztec Invitational

Long Beach - Long Beach State travels down to San Diego on Saturday as the 49ers take part in the 64th annual Aztec Invitational at hosted by San Diego State. The women's 5k race is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m. and the men's 8k race is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. Both races will be held at Balboa Park.
The women's field will consist of six-time Aztec Invitational champions Arkansas, Air Force, Chico State, Loyola Marymount, Northern Arizona, Southern California, and UC Santa Barbara. On the mens' side, the field will feature defending champions Air Force, BYU, Chico State, Loyola Marymount, Minnesota, Northern Arizona and UC Santa Barbara.
LBSU is coming off a successful start to the 2008 campagin as the 49ers took first and second place finishes at the Fullerton Season Opener. The women's team, led by senior Sarah Apgar, won the title with 82 points and the men's team, led by freshman Matt Maldonado, finished in second place with 62 points.
Last year in San Diego, both teams placed in the top 10 as the men finished in fifth place and the women finished in seventh. Senior Dylan Jaedtke was the top runner for the men as he recorded a time of 25:42 and finished in 25th. Sophomore Josh Ruff crossed the finish line in 57th with a time of 26:58 and fellow classman Mark Thomas finished in 74th with a time of 27:26. Apgar led the women's squad as she ran a time of 18:18 and finished in 30th, while fellow senior Carly Harris came in just 43 seconds behind and finished in 32nd. Other returning 49ers that participated in last year's race and looks to return for a stronger run are Missy Barlcay (43rd), Veronica Franco, (120th), Melissa Velasquez (88th), Kristina Wilson (66th) and Jennifer Rodriguez.
