Dirtbags Headed Off for the Summer

LONG BEACH--Long Beach State Baseball will send over a dozen players around the country to play in summer ball leagues to better themselves for the 2009 season. Three underclassmen are headed to the prestigious Cape Cod League, where previous LBSU draft picks Danny Espinosa, Jared Hughes and Evan Longoria played, while others are headed to New England, Alaska, Northwoods, Texas Collegiate and West Coast Collegiate Leagues.
Headed to the Cape will be lefthander Adam Wilk, who had a 1.26 ERA in 15 appearances last year, as he will play for Orleans and face off against freshman teammates Devin Lohman and Jake Thompson, who will both play for Chatham. Lohman, the team's second baseman for part of the season, batted .253, while Thompson, the team's Sunday starter, went 2-5 with a 4.95 ERA.
Jonathan Jones, the team's starting center fielder, who will be team's returning hitter at .343 with 38 runs in 43 starts, will head to Alaska to play for Anchorage, as will reliever David Brown (0.00 ERA in 11 appearances).
Catcher Kip Masuda (.250 average in 19 games), outfielder TJ Mittelstaedt (.219 in 47 games) and reliever Dustin Rasco ( 2.14 ERA in 23 games) will all play in the Texas Collegiate League, as all three will play for Brazos Valley for the second-straight year.
Catcher John Hill (.296 in 22 games), who missed part of the season with mono, and lefthanded specialist Jason Markovitz (1.08 ERA in 11 appearances) will both play for North Shore of the New England Collegiate League.
