LONG BEACH-- Long Beach State senior water polo player Dayna Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) was named an honorable mention All-American by the Water Polo Coaches Association after leading the 49ers in goals with 68 this past season. The scoring total was the second-best in school-history.
Wawrzynski joins her sister Drue, who was an honorable mention All-American in 2005, as the ninth 49er woman to earn All-America honors. Dayna is the third Wawrzysnki to earn All-America status, as their father, Paul, was named a second team All-American for the 49ers in the 1970's. Another brother, Tyler, played water polo for the 49ers ending in 2001.
Dayna, who was a starter full-time in 2008, finished her career with 91 career goals, just short of becoming the 10th player to reach the century mark in career scoring. She scored 20 goals as a junior, after tallying just three her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Wawrzynski earlier this year was named honorable mention All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for the 16-17 Forty-Niners. This is the school's last year in the MPSF, as they move to the Big West next season.
