LONG BEACH--Loyola Marymount (14-8) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to win their eighth in a row and defeat host Long Beach State (11-13) 7-5 on Thursday afternoon.
Eliana Arellano made five saves in goal for LMU, including key saves in the second and fourth quarters which would have closed the deficit for the 49ers. Lauren Sieprath had two goals for the 49ers and Nicole Hughes had three goals for the Lions.
LMU opened up the game with a 2-0 lead after the first period, before the first of three goals by Hughes gave the Lions a 3-0 lead with 5:17 left in the second period. Sieprath then countered with the first of her two goals to make it 3-1 with 4:51 remaining. Arellano then made a save on a breakaway by Sieprath minutes later, before Cecilia Canetti's lob shot made it 3-2 with 3:28 left.
The two teams then traded goals, before Hughes scored with 2:34 and 1:48 left in the third period to give the Lions a 6-3 advantage. The second of two scores by Mary Ann Campos on a penalty shot then made it 7-3 with 29 seconds left. The 49ers though answered as Sieprath scored with 14 seconds left to make it 7-4, before Arellano saved a penalty shot at the seven minute mark to keep it at 7-4.
Kelsie Emerick then scored the final goal of the game with 3:34 remaining to cut the LMU lead to 7-5.
The 49ers are next in action next Friday when they host Hawaii at 3 p.m., before hosting the LBSU Mini Tournament on April 13.
