LONG BEACH-- Dayna Wawrzynski scored four goals including the eventual game-winner in the fourth quarter as Long Beach State (12-13, 4-6 MPSF) upset No. 4-ranked Hawaii (15-7, 7-4 MPSF) 10-9 at the campus pool on Friday afternoon. Kristen Stragier made 12 saves in goal for the 49ers, including 10 in the first half.
Wawrzynksi put the 49ers on the board early as her first two scores gave LBSU a 2-0 lead early in the first period as Stragier made four first period saves, before the first of four scores by Angela Turnbull tied it at 2-2 with 12 seconds remaining. After the 49ers opened up the second period with a goal, Turnbull and Saara Majuri scored to give Hawaii the lead at 4-3 with three minutes remaining in the half. Stragier kept Hawaii off the board for much of the quarter, making six saves as Becky Genter tied it at the 2-meter position with 1:17 remaining.
In the third period, Turnbull scored two goals to open the quarter and Hawaii jumped out to a 7-4 lead on the second of two goals by Carmen Eggens with 4:01 remining. But the 49ers answered, as Wawrzynski scored followed by Kelsie Emerick with one second left, both on 6-on-5 goals, to cut the deficit to 7-6 at the end of the third period. The 49ers then scored three straight to open the fourth quarter, paced by a Branwyn Lee putback with 4:42 remaining to make it 9-7. Kelly Mason made it 9-8 with 3:20 left, before Wawrzynski scord with 2:49 left to make it 10-8. A late Lisa van Raalte score with 1:42 left cut it to 10-9 to finish the scoring.
