Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's women's cross country squad has been honored for their academic achievement by the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The 49er women as a team were recognized as part of the 2007 All-Academic Team program.
Honoring teams which had a combined cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above, Long Beach State was part of nearly half the country who received the honor. However, the 49ers were ranked 44th overall, finishing the semester with a GPA of 3.47. That was among the best in the country, with 325 schools nationwide participating in women's cross country.
Originally picked to finish sixth at the beginning of the season, the 49ers improved through the year, taking a fourth place finish at the Big West Championships. That success continued through the NCAA Regionals, where the 49ers took 10th place, led by Sarah Apgar who finished 29th overall.
The 49er distance runners will continue to be in action through the rest of the year as part of the outdoor track and field season. Their first event occurs this weekend at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, Calif.
