San Diego, Calif. - Another win and another shutout for Brooke Turner headlined the 49ers' 1-0 win against No. 23 San Diego State on Saturday. Turner struck out six batters and allowed just three hits, setting the stage for Jennifer Griffin's RBI single in the sixth inning.
Griffin finished with two of the six hits for Long Beach State, adding a third-inning double to go with the game-winner in the sixth inning. Franciska Morlet also picked up a big hit for the 49ers, going 1-for-2 and scoring the 49ers lone run.
In the circle, Brooke Turner put together another dominating performance, striking out six batters and scattering three hits. The Aztecs best chance came in the fourth inning, when Tonye McCorkle led off the inning with a single to center. Two ground ball outs moved her over to third, giving San Diego State their only runner on the hot corner in the game. Turner ended the inning by striking out catcher Megan McDonald, stopping the opportunity for SDSU.
For the 49ers, Long Beach State had their own problems getting started against Christina Ross. Ross gave up six hits and struck out five, and held her own with Turner through five innings.
The Beach finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Morelt started the inning off with a single, and advanced to second after a one-out single from Jonae Perez. Lacy Tyler flew out for the second out, but Griffin came through on an 0-1 count with a single to left, scoring the speedy Morlet from second.
Long Beach State closes out their time in San Diego tomorrow with another ranked opponent, No. 5 Texas A&M. The 49ers face off with the Aggies on the campus of San Diego, starting play at 2 p.m.
