San Diego, Calif. - Brooke LeSage hit a single with runners on second and third in the first inning to give the 49ers a two-run lead, and the 49ers hung on through the next seven innings for a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Texas A&M. Brooke Turner struck out seven and allowed one run to the Aggies.
In their last matchup with a No. 5 opponent, the 49ers picked up a 2-1 win over Florida, and the similarities in Sunday's matchup were clear, in both the ranking and the final score along with the pitching of Brooke Turner. Turner struck out seven batters while allowing just one run, holding off an Aggies lineup that came into the game having produced 28 wins for Texas A&M.
Texas A&M starter Rhiannon Kliesing came into the game with an 8-3 record, and controlled the 49ers for six innings, striking out eight, but gave up two runs early as Long Beach State grabbed the lead and never let go.
Jonae Perez started the rally by drawing a walk on a nine-pitch at-bat, and Lacy Tyler singled to left to put two runners on. Jennifer Griffin took a wild pitch, advancing both runners, but ended up striking out on the play. LeSage followed with a two-out single, scoring both Perez and Tyler to give the 49ers a 2-0 lead.
That lead would be plenty, as Turner was in control throughout. The Aggies would generate one run in the sixth inning off of a walk, bunt and single, but otherwise were unable to get anything going against the 49er freshman, who struck out seven while giving up just four hits.
For Long Beach State, Lacy Tyler had a second hit to go with her key first-inning single, and LeSage added a walk to her clutch at-bat earlier in the game.
Next up for Long Beach State is the CSUF Judy Garman Invitational, where the 49ers will play five games in four games beginning on Wednesday with New Mexico.
