LONG BEACH--Long Beach State women's water polo (8-9, 3-3 MPSF) will double dip twice over a four-day period, playing in San Diego against No. 6-ranked San Diego State (11 a.m.) and Colorado State (5 p.m.) at the Aztecs pool on Saturday, before hosting Maryland (12 p.m.) and Princeton (3 p.m.) on Tuesday, March 18.
The 49ers have split their last four contests, losing to Arizona State last Sunday, after defeating CS Northridge a day earlier. Lauren Sieprath scored five goals last weekend to lead the 49ers, while Dayna Wawrzynski added three.
The Aztecs are an impressive 16-2 overall and 3-1 in MPSF play, winning five games at the Princeton Invite, four more at UC San Diego and three of four at the UC Irvine Invite. Colorado State is 5-13 on the season, playing in the San Diego area for three days, beginning on Friday at UC San Diego.
Catharine von Schwarz is in her second season at the helm, finishing eighth last year at the MPSF Championships. The 49ers are currently in seventh place at 3-3, and despite being ranked No. 13 nationally, are ahead of three teams who have top-10 rankings.
Wawrzynski, a senior, leads the club with 29 goals this season, while Sieprath, who has played in two less games, has 22. Sieprath has scored at least three goals in four separate contests over the last month and has scored in all but four contests of her freshman season. Wawrzysnki has already surprassed her career total (23) coming into the season, scoring in all but three contests. Wawrzysnki's total ranks 26th nationally.
Sophomore Cecilia Canetti, who scored in each of the first 12 games, has scored just two goals since, tallying 20 on the season.
Freshman Kelsie Emerick has come on as of late, scoring five goals over the last four games, while sophomore Branwyn Lee has five goals as well and 18 goals on the season.
Freshman Kristen Stragier continues to be the main goalie this season, tallying 143 saves this year. Stragier ranks 10th nationally in saves.
