LONG BEACH-- No. 32-ranked Long Beach State (8-4) will have a busy couple of days ahead of them, as they host Purdue (2-7) on Wednesday and the University of Pennsylvania (3-3) on Thursday, before traveling over to the Costa Mesa Tennis Courts to host Nevada (3-6) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The team's two earlier contests with Penn and Purdue will be at 1 p.m. at the El Dorado Tennis Courts on Studebaker in Long Beach.
The 49ers enter the week having won five straight and at No. 32 nationally are at their highest national ranking of the season. All four of the 49ers losses this season are to teams currently ranked in the top-25.
Brooke Beier is the Boilermakers top player, going 5-4, while Stephanie Wooten is 4-3 at the No. 3 position. Beir and Wooten have teamed up to go 4-0 in the spring. Penn plays Pepperdine on Tuesday, after losing 4-3 to San Diego State and UC Irvine during their West Coast swing. Julia Koulbitskaya and Ekateina Kosminskaya are ranked No. 17 nationally in doubles. For the Wolfpack, Maria Mizyuk is No. 40 nationally, checking in at 16-8 overall, while Caroline Bailly is 9-8. Alice Hall and Florence de Vrye are 6-4 at the No. 3 doubles position.
Stephanie Bengson, who is on a current four-match winning streak, is now third all-time in singles wins with 64 and counting, going 12-9 this season. Bengson's 131 total wins is two away from second all-time and 16 away from Sandra Rocha's school-record of 147. Her 64 doubles wins is third-best all-time.
No. 72-ranked Hannah Grady, who is a team-best 17-6 this year, has 58 career singles wins, which is fourth-best all-time. Grady has won her last five. Grady has posted 112 total wins, fifth-best all-time. Grady is also looking to become the fourth player all-time with 20 or more wins in a season twice during her career. With 10 more regular season matches, plus playoffs, Grady has a good chance of reaching the school-record of 28 set by Alena Dvornikova in 2002 and tied by Katy Williams in 2006.
Freshman Deborah Armstrong is also three wins away from No. 20, going 17-9 during her first season. Armstrong has won five straight and seven of her last nine.
On the doubles side, the 49ers have won the doubles point in nine straight matches. The team of Grady and Bengson are a team-best 14-4 on the year and can reach the top-15 at LBSU with three wins this week. That duo has won eight straight. The No. 3 team of Armstrong and Lisa Sutton has won seven straight and are 8-2 overall.
