LONG BEACH-- The 49ers (5-4) moved up to No. 36 in the nation and will begin a six-game home stand this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against No. 48-ranked Saint Mary's (6-1). The home stand will continue on March 7 against UC Davis and March 8 in a key homecoming and conference showdown with UC Irvine.
All games will be played at El Dorado Park as the new tennis facility is being built on campus thanks in part to the donations from the Rhodes and Hendricks Familes.
The Gaels have already beaten four West Coast Conference foes (San Francisco, Gonzaga, Portland and Santa Clara) with their only loss coming to No. 6-ranked Stanford (6-1). The 49ers will be just the third ranked team SMC will play this season (compared to seven for LBSU) , as the Gaels have also beat No. 46 Oregon 4-3.
Jessica Hoath, at 10-8, is No. 57 nationally, while the Gaels also have two 10-game winners in Stefanie Ordveza (11-4) and Alexandra Poorta (12-4). Four different doubles teams have at least three wins.
Hannah Grady, at 14-6 in singles play this year, is ranked No. 75 nationally, having gone 5-4 in singles competition. Freshman Deborah Armstrong also has 14 wins, going 14-9 and playing primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Stephanie Bengson will try to get over .500 as she enters her match with the Gaels at 9-9.
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Grady and Bengson are 11-4 on the season and a team-best 6-4 in dual play. The duo is ranked No. 52 nationally. The No. 3 team of Armstrong and fellow freshman, Lisa Sutton, is 5-2.
