Long Beach State (6-4) split their two matches at the UC Irvine Invitational, rebounding after a 10-6 loss to Hawaii to defeat UC Santa Barbara 14-11 in overtime in action on Saturday afternoon.
In the later contest, the 49ers rebounded after giving up six goals in the final period, to come up with three unanswered in overtime to come away with the 14-11 score. Dayna Wawrzynski and Keala O'Sullivan had three goals a piece in the win, while Kristen Stragier came away with 10 saves.
LBSU took a 3-1 lead after the first period and then watched the Gauchos tie it at 4-4 at the half. After taking an 7-5 lead after three, UCSB countered by outscoring The Beach 6-to-3 in the final frame to send it into overtime at 11-11.
The 49ers opened up the UC Irvine Tournament at Corona del Mar High School with a 10-6 loss to Hawaii to open up the two-day, four-game tournament. The Wahine opened up with a 3-0 score in the first period and 6-1 lead at the half. Lauren Sieprath had three goals for LBSU, while Wawrzynski added two goals.
With the win, the 49ers will play at 8 a.m. tomorrow against Arizona State. LBSU will then at either 1:30 p.m. or 2:45 p.m. with a chance to finish as high as ninth.
