Senior Dayna Wawrzysnki scored three goals and Long Beach State (5-2, 1-0 MPSF) scored six goals in the third period to rout visiting UC Santa Barbara (4-3, 0-1 MPSF) 10-6 on Saturday afternoon. Kristen Stragier had 12 saves in goal for the 49ers, including six in the first half, as the 49ers turned a one-goal lead into a six-goal rout by the end of the third period.
In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams, LBSU took a 2-1 lead after the first period thanks to Wawrzysnki's two goals and traded goals in the second period to enter the half up 3-2. The 49ers then exploded for three unaswered by freshman Kelsie Emerick, Wawrzysnki and Leonard to lead 6-2 with 5:47 left. After trading penatly shots, Branwyn Lee added two more scores to make it 9-3 with 1:33 remaining.
Cecilia Canetti then scored the second of her two goals on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 6:47 remaining in the fourth to make it 10-3. UCSB then countered with the final three goals of the contest.
The 49ers are next in action when they host top-ranked UCLA tomorrow at noon.
