LONG BEACH - As Long Beach State students return to class, this week also marks the beginning of track and field season as the indoor participants hit the road for their first meet of the season. The 49ers will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to participate in the Northern Arizona Invitational on Saturday.
Head Coach Andy Sythe and Long Beach State make their way to NAU where the team competes in their first invitational of the year. The 49ers will be bringing a lighter contingent this week in preparation for a scored indoor dual meet to be held next week, again in Flagstaff.
Those two meets are part of the leadup into the indoor championships this season. The 49ers will first participate in the MPSF indoor championships starting on Friday, February 29. From there, athletes that have earned a spot will head to the NCAA Indoor National Championships, held this year in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Last season, the 49ers had a pair of indoor All-Americans, as senior Jimmy Grabow finished the 5,000 in 13:59.45, and Ronald Carter took fourth place in the triple jump. The 49ers have a number of top athletes competing in indoor competitions this year as well, and Saturday's meet should help show who to look for in both the upcoming indoor meets as well as the outdoor season, beginning on February 15 with the Riverside CC Inviational.
