FIRST RUN: The Long Beach State cross-country team travels to Sunnyvale, Calif. for the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13 ... the men's 8k will begin at 9:30 am and the women's 5k will start at 10:15 am at the Baylands Park.
CUNNIFF ON TRITON CLASSIC: "We are excited to get up to Santa Clara to get another competition in and make our final dry run before conference and regional championships," said Distance Coach Patrick Cunniff. "We have been doing more intense and faster workouts and that should be reflected in our ability to handle faster race paces. Dylan Jaedtke continues to lead our men's team, but several people are really training well and it should be fun to see the ongoing development of our young men adjusting to college distances. Sarah Apgar is really going well for the women's team and I see signs that a number of girls are really coming around and ready to run well. It should be a great meet."
FORTY-NINER MEN IN THE RANKINGS: For the third straight week, the 49er men are ranked 15th in the USTCCCA West Regional Rankings ... three other Big West members are ranked as well with Cal Poly (No. 6), UC Santa Barbara (No. 10) and UC Riverside (No. 11).
STANFORD INVITATIONAL: The Long Beach State women's team was ninth, while the men's team was 10th at the 34th running of the Stanford Inviational on Saturday ... Dylan Jaedtke was the top male finisher for the 49ers, finishing just six seconds short of his personal-best with a time of 24:56 in the 8K race for 37th place ... on the women's side, Sarah Apgar ran 21:45 for 24th place in her first collegiate 6K ... the trio of Carly Harris (22:15), Kristina Wilson (22:17) and Missy Barclay (22:17) finished 46th, 48th and 49th ... Barclay's time was a personal-best by 19 seconds, her second personal-best of the season ... Kuhlman was the second 49er male to finish, running 25:30 for 69th place.
CUNNIFF ON LAST MEET: "I thought that this (Stanford) meet was a great learning experience, against a high level of competion," said Distance Coach Patrick Cunniff ... "I was really happy with the performance of our 2-3-4 women and thought they were very competitive and ran well together ... Dylan continued to be an outstanding leader on the men's side, while freshman Travis Kuhlman ran a very exciting race and showed a lot of potential."
THE COACH: Patrick Cunniff takes over the duties as cross-country coach as he spent the last two years as an assistant at Texas Christian University ... Cunniff coached six NCAA Division I National Championship qualifiers during his two years at TCU (2004-06), including three cross country student-athletes ... the TCU women finished second at the Conference USA Championships in 2004 and at the '04 South Central Regional a TCU runner won the individual cross country championship. Cunniff coached 10 student-athletes to individual conference championships during his tenure (1 cross country, 6 indoor, 3 outdoor) ... during the spring of 2006 Cunniff served as the interim head coach at TCU. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach for women's track and cross country at the University of Texas ... in his time at UT the Longhorns won the 2003 and 2004 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships while also winning the 2003 South Central Regional Cross Country title ... for the past year he has served as a program coach and team coordinator for Luke's Locker, an adult program in 5k, 10k and marathon training ...
