49ers Finish in Sixth Place at Triton Invite
LA JOLLA, CA-- Long Beach State (4-2) finished in sixth place at the Triton Invitational, moving up from ninth place from a year ago, after defeating host UC San Diego 10-7 and losing to UC Davis 6-4 in the fifth place game. In the earlier contest freshman goalie Kristen Straiger made 15 saves, two away from the school-record of 17 and became just the third woman ever to amass that many in a single contest. The 49ers went up 4-1 on the host Tritons early and never looked back. Dayna Wawrzynski had three goals, while Cecilia Canetti added two. In the fifth place contest, LBSU fell behind 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 at the half and never could recover, falling 6-4. New Zealander Lauren Sieprath continued her first collegiate weekend with a goal in every contest, as she was one of four players to score on the afternoon. Wawrzynski and Canetti each had another as well. Straiger made eight saves. The 49ers next host UC Santa Barbara and UCLA next Saturday and Sunday at the campus pool to begin MPSF play. |
