The Long Beach State cross country teams will be northern California participating in the NCAA West Regional on Saturday, November 15, at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto. The women's 6K race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 10K meet at noon.
The 49ers are coming off a disappointing run at the Big West Conference Championships two weeks ago as the men's squad finished in fifth place and the women came in at sixth. Sarah Apgar and Travis Kuhlman led the way for The Beach as both runners finished in 11th and 23rd respectively.
LBSU will be looking to improve their performances from last year's regional in Eugene, Ore. as the women finished in 10th with 334 points and the men in 13th with 420. Apgar was the top runner for the women as she crossed the finish line in 29th with a mark of 21:14.45, while Kuhlman led the men's side as he finished in 61st with a time of 31:43.45.
The top two teams in each race qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships that will be held at Terre Haute, Ind., along with the top for individuals not on qualifying teams. Thirteen at-large berths will be up for grabs as teams will be awarded based on a season-long points system developed by the NCAA, with priority toward top regional placers.
