Palm Desert, Calif. - After day one of the inaugural Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Long Beach State finished in 6th place on Saturday evening at the Classic Club in Palm Desert. The 49ers shot an opening round of 298 and came back in the second with a 303. Colorado State leads the field of 19 teams as the Rams (593) hold a three shot lead ahead of second place Oregon State (596).
Going up against gusty winds all day, junior Michael Drake leads the 49ers as he shot an even-par 72 in the opening round and finished off with 3-over in the afternoon session to tie for 6th at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.
Sophomore Ricky Montanez continues with his strong peformance this season as he came in tied for 20th with a 75 in both rounds. Junior Steve Gibson improved his play in the second round by six shots with a 73 to finish tied for 32nd. Freshmen Kevin Lim and Kevin Roy finished the day tied for 49th and 68th respectively.
"It was a really windy day as we played okay," said 49er Head Coach Bill Poutre. "We didn't protect par off the tee and we simply ran out of gas in the afternoon round. We need to keep our focus like we did in the first round and protect par for tomorrow if we're going to make a run for the title."
Final round play concludes on Sunday morning at 7 a.m.
