Long Beach - The Long Beach State men's cross country team moved up No. 15 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Regional poll that was released this week.
Led by freshman Matt Maldonado and sophomore Travis Kuhlman, this year's squad features a young team that has steadily improved over the course of their first three meets of the 2008 campaign. In the Fullerton Season Opener, the 49ers finished in second place, just five points behind host Cal State Fullerton. After finishing 14th at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, The Beach came back with a strong performance at the Stanford Invitational with a 9th place finish.
"This ranking shows that we are moving in the right direction. It shows respect for the quality of our performance at the Stanford Invitational and indicates that people see our potential," said 49er distance coach Patrick Cunniff. "Hopefully, this gets the guys excited and makes them even more hungry to keep moving up. It's a great group of young guys and we still have a lot of potential to mature and improve."
The 49ers are next in action as they travel to La Jolla for the UCSD Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11. The women's 6K race is scheduled for a 8:30 a.m. start and the men's meet will begin at 9:30 a.m.
