NORTHRIDGE --Deon Tresvant led five players in double digits with 19 points as Cal State Northridge defeated Long Beach State 100-61 in a Big West men's basketball game on Saturday evening in Northridge. The first place Matadors improved to 14-4 overall and remained perfect in the league at 6-0. The 49ers, who were led by Donovan Morris' 25 points, fell to 4-14 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Junior Brice Gallow had a career-high 17 points for the 49ers, who shot .367 (18-49) from the field for the game. Brandon Johnson added seven points and freshman Lauren Heard scored six points in his first game as a 49er. The 49ers were 20-27 at the free throw line for the game and freshman Greg Plater dished out five assists.
For the Matadors, Jayme Miller had 18 points, Calvin Chitwood 14, and Josh Jenkins had nine points and a career-high 11 assists. CSUN shot .521 (38-73) from the field and forced 21 turnovers. CSUN opened the second half by scoring the first five points and eventually extended its lead to 41 points, 87-46 with 8:41 remaining. The Matadors hit 11 three-pointers in the game, five by Tresvant, and dished out 24 assists on its 38 made baskets.
In the opening stanza both teams struggled early from the field, but CSUN used an 8-0 run, thanks to back-to-back three's by Jenkins and Tresvant to take a 13-3 lead at the 12:18 mark. The 49ers cut the deficit to 22-16 at 8:42 after a Gallow three, but Heard scored five consecutive points and the Matadors held the 49ers without a made field goal over the final seven minutes of the half to take a 47-26 halftime lead. Morris had 12 first half points and Gallow added 11 for Long Beach. CSUN had three players in double digits in scoring at the break and shot 48.6 (18-37) from the field, while out-rebounding the 49ers 22-to-16. Long Beach shot .318 (7-22) from the field in the opening half and had 14 turnovers.
The 49ers played the game without Artis Gant and Darnell Porter who were dismissed from the team on Friday for "attitude's detrimental to the team".
The 49ers return next week when they host Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, January 30 at the Walter Pyramid.
