LONG BEACH-- CS Fullerton (13-6, 6-2 Big West) took advantage of 17 turnovers by Long Beach State, while shooting 51 percent from the field to come away with a 91-75 Big West Conference victory at the Walter Pyramid on Thursday night.
Josh Akognon and Frank Robinson had 18 points a piece for the Titans who won their third straight. LBSU (4-15, 1-6) shot 47 percent from the field and were led by 31 points from Donovan Morris. Maurice Clady had a career-best 13 points for the 49ers, and added five assists. Arturas Lazdauskas had a strong game in his first start as a 49er finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The 49ers had 21 assists on the night and were 10-of-21 from 3-point range. Morris was 5-8 from long-range and Clady hit all three of his attempts.
The 49ers kept it close in the first half, and would have trailed by only three, if not for a buzzer beating three-pointer by Junior Russell from 20 feet out to give CS Fullerton a 49-43 halftime lead. The 49ers trailed 18-13 at the 12:01 mark, but used a 9-0 run to grab a 22-18 advantage with 9:25 remaining. Long Beach was able to push the lead to 31-24 at 6:33 on a three by Morris, who tallied 19 points in the opening half. The Titans closed out the half with a 25-12 run over the final six minutes to take the six-point halftime lead.
The Titans extended their lead to double digits and held the 49ers without a field goal for six minutes in the second half to extend an 11-point lead to 21 (82-61 at 8:39). CS Fullerton meanwhile took care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers while hitting 12-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Titans also had 10 steals and out-rebounded Long Beach 36-to-34.
The 49ers are next in action when they host UC Irvine as part of a doubleheader with the women's team at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday. It will also continue the Black and Blue Rivalry between the two schools.
