BOX SCORE

WINSTON-SALEM, NC-- No. 24-ranked Wake Forest (2-1-0) edged defending Big West Champion, No. 23-ranked Long Beach State (2-1-0) 1-0 on a warm and muggy Wednesday evening, tallying the game-winner in the 50th minute.

Liz Ramos made three saves on 14 Wake Forest shots, but most were taken well outside the penalty box against the 49er defense. LBSU managed just seven shots, all coming in the second half, after a decidedly Wake Forest first half. The Deacons had just five second half shots, including the game-winner in the 50th minute.

Jill Hutchinson fired a rebounded shot off a corner kick from the near side at 49:16 to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead. LBSU then had two opportunities to tie it up 10 minutes later, but could not convert, as WFU held on for the one-goal win.

In the 65th minute, Hayley Bolt sent it ahead to Kristen Kiefer, but Kiefer's bouncer went just left of the goal. Mariko Strickland began another break in the 68th minute, but again Kiefer missed left, deeper this time in the box.

The Deacons twice threatened early in the match, as Maggie Horne missed a shot high from inside the box in the 10th minute, before a missed opportunity went wide, two minutes later, deep inside the box. In the 32nd minute, Kristina Hanley missed a bicycle kick on a corner kick as the match remained scoreless through the half.

Ramos made two first half saves on nine Wake Forest shots. The Beach did not attempt a shot over the first 45 minutes, as after the first nine minutes of play, the Deacons controlled the first half, taking six shots over the final 36 minutes.

Wake Forest has made the last 11 NCAA Tournaments.

The 49ers stay on the road for the next two matches, playing at No. 20-ranked Clemson on Friday before heading to BYU for a match on September 11.
