49ers Edge Again by ACC Foe, Lose 2-1 at Clemson
CLEMSON, SC-- No. 23-ranked Long Beach State (2-2-0) did not allow a second half shot, but could not overcome two Clemson goals over the first 21 minutes, as the No. 20-ranked Tigers (3-0-0) survived to defeat the 49ers 2-1 on Friday evening. The 49ers had a couple of chances in the closing minutes, but were never able to convert, despite holding the ball in their end for the final three and a half minutes. LBSU outshot the Tigers 11-to-3 attacking for most of the match. Ashley Phillips made four saves on goal for the Tigers. Clemson converted on their first two shot attempts, LBSU meanwhile had one shot blocked inside the box and another saved by Phillips as the Tigers built a 2-0 lead in the first period. The 49ers ended the half outshooting Clemson 5-to-3, cutting the Tiger lead to 2-1 in the 34th minute. Clemson broke through the 49er defense in the 10th minute following a goal kick, as Molly Franklin brought it up, passed it to Julie Bolt, who crossed it to Courtney Foster at 7:26 to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Franklin broke down the defense again in the 21st minute, passing up a shot from 10 yards out, to pass to Nuria Zufia and make it 2-0 from five yards out. Clemson had one more shot in the match, in the 41st minute. Kristen Kiefer had a chance to cut the lead in half in the 37th minute, before Nikki Myers and the 49er offense pulled the goalkeeper out and scored from 45 yards out and cut the Clemson lead to 2-1. The play was set up moments earlier as Hayley Bolt was serving it from the defensive end to Kiefer, who originally brought Phillips out of her position. Mariko Strickland had a chance to tie it, sending it ahead to Kiefer in the 70th minute, but a soft save by Phillips kept Clemson in front by a single goal. The 49ers remain on the road, after returning home for two days this weekend, to play at Brigham Young on Tuesday, September 11. NOTES: It was the first time this season the Shevlin Twins, Grace and Caroline, have started together at LBSU. Both are freshmen this year, who started in the backfield... it was Breanna Truelove's first start in goal after redshirting as a junior transfer last season... Clemson reached the Elite Eight last season. |
