Dirtbags Sweep Cal Poly 12-7 LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 24-ranked Long Beach State (30-14, 10-2 Big West) used a 10-run sixth inning to sweep visiting Cal Poly (24-23, 8-5 Big West) 12-7, win their eighth in a row and remain a game in front in the Big West standings. Seven players drove in at least one run. The Dirtbags scored 10 runs in the sixth, hitting double digits in an inning for the first time since 2003, erasing a 4-1 lead and taking an 11-4 lead after sending 14 men to the plate. Three errors by the Cal Poly defense led to six of the runs. A three-run Cal Poly seventh cut the lead to 11-7, two off of reliever Omar Arif (3-5), who took home the win, before Bryan Shaw got the final seven outs. The Beach finally got to Cal Poly starter Thomas Eager (8-3) in the sixth, scoring five runs off the righthander to take a 6-4 lead. Shane Peterson became the ninth 49er ever to hit in 20-straight games, when his single made it 4-2. Then two errors by the Mustang defense, one on a throwing error by catcher Wes Dorrell, following a double steal, and another on a missed catch by third baseman Brent Morel tied the game at 4-4. AJ Pinocchio's RBI single then made it 5-4 with one out. A pinch-hit RBI double by Taylor Krick made it 6-4, before a two-run, two-out single by Matt Cline made it 8-4. Danny Espinosa's two-run double then made it 11-4 after a failed pickoff plated the ninth run. Chris Nelson broke up Eager's no-hitter with two outs in the third as a sacrifce fly scored Pinocchio from third following a leadoff triple in the fifth to make it 4-1 in the fifth. Eager gave up just three hits over the first five innings. Eager gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits, striking out seven and walking one. The Mustangs built a 4-0 lead, all in the fourth, off of Peterson, who started the game and did not get out of the inning. An RBI single by Adam Buschini then made it 2-0. Another RBI single, this time by Kyle Carson made it 3-0 and chased Peterson from the game with two outs. A throwing error by Espinosa at short, off an infield hit allowed the fourth run to score. The Beach begins a five-game road trip beginning on Tuesday when they play in a nationally televised game on College Sports Television on Tuesday at San Diego State at 6 p.m. |
