McElroy Leads Beach Past Cal Poly 8-3 LONG BEACH, CA-- Manny McElroy (4-1) pitched seven strong innings as No. 24-ranked Long Beach State (28-14, 8-2 Big West) took the opener of the three-game series against visiting Cal Poly (24-21, 8-5 Big West), 8-3. LBSU has now won six in a row. Travis Howell drove in three of the five runs in the sixth, going 2-for-4, while AJ Pinocchio had three hits. Shane Peterson extended his hit streak to 18 games as part of a two-hit night, as he drove in the first run of the ballgame. TJ Mittelstaedt and Robert Perry also had two hits a piece as part of an 11-hit attack. McElroy, after scattering five hits over the first three innings, retired seven in a row into the seventh. McElroy struck out a Division-I best six, gave up eight hits, an unearned run in the seventh, and did not walk a batter over seven innings. He has not walked a batter over the last 21.2 innings. The Beach got on the board in the first against Eric Massingham, as Mittelstaedt, following a leadoff double, scored on a Peterson triple to make it 1-0. An RBI groundout by Danny Espinosa made it 2-0. Massingham left the game in the fourth, giving up the first two runs on six hits. Peterson's bases loaded walk in the sixth off of reliever Frankie Reed made it 3-0, before a hit by pitch off the arm of Grant Theophilus made it 4-0. Howell broke open the game with a three-run double to make it 7-0. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. |
