Cline Walks His Way to Series Victory LONG BEACH, CA--Matt Cline went 3-for-4 and walked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth as No. 23-ranked Long Beach State (16-11) beat visiting Oral Roberts (15-14) for the second-straight night, winning 8-7. LBSU had put two runners on off of eventual loser Michael Jarman (2-4), before reliever Erik Crichton intentionally walked Jason Tweedy and then walked Cline on a 3-2 pitch. Bryan Shaw (3-2), got the final two outs in the top of the ninth to pick up the win. ORU starter Jeremy Hefner seemed to run out of gas in the seventh, giving up a two-run lead as LBSU came back to tie it at 7-7. A fielder's choice made it 7-6, before a two-out pinch-hit single by AJ Pinocchio tied it at 7-7 on pitch No. 127 for the Oral Roberts pitcher. Hefner gave up seven runs (four earned) over seven innings. Manny McElroy, making his first start and appearance since February 10, lasted a pre-determined 40 pitches, going two and two-third innings, giving up three unearned runs in the third inning. Reliever Shane Peterson was then roughed up in the fourth, giving up three runs including a solo home run by Stephen Pearson as ORU re-took the lead to lead 6-3 The Beach then closed to within 6-5 in the fourth with two additional runs. The finale of the three-game series will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
