Liebel Pitches Gem in Relief; Peterson and Godfrey Star at the Plate

LONG BEACH, CA-- Andrew Liebel (5-2) and Vance Worley combined on a two-hitter as No. 23-ranked Long Beach State (15-11) shutout visting Oral Roberts (15-13) 4-0 on Thursday evening. Shane Peterson drove two runs as part of a 2-for-3 day, while Brandon Godfrey added three hits.

Liebel retired the final 13 batters of the game, pitching the final six shutout innings and giving up just one hit, while tying his career high with four strikeouts.

ORU's Chance Chapman (3-1), who was named the National Pitcher of the Week following 17 strikeouts against Arkansas nine days ago, gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings.

Catcher Brian Capon threw out two batters from behind the plate.

LBSU put a run on the board in the first with an RBI single from Steve Tinoco to lead 1-0 early. Peterson then made it 2-0 in the third with his own RBI single. Peterson's RBI single in the fifth scored Godfrey again from second to make it 3-0. TJ Mittelstaedt's squeeze in the fifth scored Peterson from third following Peterson's second steal of the game.

Dirtbag starter Vance Worley left after three shutout innings with an injury, striking out four and giving up just one hit while facing 10 batters.

Friday's game will be on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with Manny McElroy (1-0, 9.00 ERA) as the projected starter for LBSU, followed by Omar Arif (1-3, 3.20) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
