IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State (7-16, 3-9 MPSF) ended the regular season
on a four-game losing streak, dropping a 13-8 decision at No. 10-ranked
UC Irvine (17-10, 4-8 MPSF) on Thursday evening. With the loss, LBSU will
be the 10th seed in next weekend's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
Championships, UCI is the ninth seed. Senior Megan Winchell led the 49ers
with four goals on Thursday and now has 11 over her last two games. Jackie
Pride led the Anteaters with four goals.
UCI goalie Lauren Machanis put up a road block in goal, making seven second
period saves, as the Anteaters built a 7-3 lead on back-to-back 6-on-5
goals to lead 7-3 late in the first half. Machanis finished with 13 saves.
Branwyn Lee cut the deficit to 5-3 off a rebounded save at 4:56, before
UCI then scored the first two goals of the third quarter over the first
2:07 and put the game out of reach.
Despite six first saves by Kim Hayes, including two at point blank range
on breakaways, UC Irvine took a 3-1 lead off of two goals from Jackie
Pride and a penalty shot by Robyn Kaake with two minutes left to make
it 3-1. Hayes finished with 12 saves, three shy of her career high.
The Beach are next in action when they travel to the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation Championships at Arizona State starting on April 26.
