Winchell Scores School-Record in Loss
TEMPE, AZ-- Megan Winchell scored a school-record seven goals for the 49ers (7-15, 3-8 MPSF), as they rallied from a six-goal first half deficit only to fall 16-14 at Arizona State (11-11, 4-6 MPSF) on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers closed to within one midway through the fourth period, on a Marina Canetti score with 4:22 left, before Bonnie Chapman scored the final goal of the contest with 3:22 left to close out 30-point output for both teams. Winchell's two fourth quarter scores started a three-goal rally to start the period and cut the ASU lead to 15-14. Originally, The Beach fell behind 10-4 at the half, before twice closing to within three goals in the third period, at 10-7 on Keala O'Sullivan's only goal of the game, at 5:54 in the third, and again at 12-9 on one of two goals from Dayna Wawrynski in the quarter, at 2:20. ASU goalie Windy Bajejos made seven first half saves, but just two after the break, countered by Kim Hayes, who made nine saves on the day. The 49ers close out the regular season on April 19 at UC Irvine before heading back to ASU for the MPSF Championships starting on April 26. |
