Sophomore Drives in Four and Wins it on the Mound

LONG BEACH, CA-- Shane Peterson (2-1) pitched five strong innings and drove in four runs with a triple and a double to lead No. 26-ranked Long Beach State (19-12, 2-2 Big West) to a 11-2 thumping of visiting CS Northridge (13-23, 1-6 Big West) on Friday evening.

Peterson tied his longest career outing, going five innings, while striking out a career-best six. He gave up two unearned runs in the fourth, off of four hits, walking none over 70 pitches.

David Roberts struck out a career-best four over two shutout innings in relief of Peterson as three pitchers combined to retire 11 CSUN batters into the ninth. TJ Mittelstaedt reached base safely four times, with two walks, a single and a hit by pitch.

CSUN's Jimmy Jolicoeur (5-3) was roughed up in the fourth and fifth innings after retiring his first nine batters of the game. Jolicoeur could not get out of the fifth, giving up seven earned runs on five hits over four and two-third innings. A two-run double by Robert Perry extended his hit streak to nine games and gave LBSU a 3-2 lead in the fourth, before a three-run triple by Peterson in the fifth, broke open the game and made it 6-2.

Peterson retired the first 10 batters of the game before giving up back-to-back singles in the fourth. After throwing a runner out at the plate, Peterson gave up a bloop single which would have loaded the bases, but instead gave CSUN a 2-0 lead after leftfielder TJ Mittelsteadt let the ball roll through his legs and allow to unearned runs to score and give the Matadors an early 2-0 lead.

The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
