Beach Sweeps Pepperdine behind Peterson

Beach Win Both Behind Peterson BOX SCORE - GAME 1 LONG BEACH, CA-- Shane Peterson drove in four runs over two games as No. 26-ranked Long Beach State (18-12) twice on its final at-bat beat No. 8-ranked Pepperdine (26-10), winning the nightcap 6-5 in nine innigns after winning the the halted game with a two-out, two-run single by Peterson in the 11th, 10-7. Peterson's double in the ninth tied game two, before a Taylor Krick grounder to third was bobbled, allowing the game-winning run to score as part of a two-run ninth inning. David Roberts (2-0) got the win following a scoreless ninth, while closer Jason Dominguez (1-3), with nine saves coming in, took the loss. Andrew Liebel pitched five and one-third innings of relief for LBSU, striking out a career-best six, but gave up the go-ahead runs in the eighth as Pepperdine built a 5-4 lead. An RBI double by Adrian Ortiz broke the second tie of the night and made it 5-4 in the eighth ater The Beach took a brief 4-3 lead in the seventh on an error by second baseman Denny Duron. Adam Wilk, on a pitch count to start for LBSU, went the first two and two-third pre-determined innings, giving up two unearned runs in the third off of two errors by shortstop Jason Tweedy as Pepperdine closed to 3-2, before tying it in the seventh. Robert Perry, batting No. 7 for the first time this season, hit a two-run home run in the second to make it 3-0. Peterson's RBI single in the first made it 1-0 in the first, about 45 minutes after he won game one with a two-run, two-out single which broke the tie in the top of the 11th of the halted game, to make it 9-7. An RBI double by Jason Corder then made it 10-7. Bryan Shaw (4-2) retired the final 12 batters to pick up the win (on 33 pitches), while Brett Hunter (5-3), 59 days after pitching the eighth and ninth, took the loss, pitching the final two innings on Tuesday. In game one, LBSU had come back from a 7-0 deficit to tie it in the eighth as the game was halted at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth due to darkness on February 6. Statistics from that game also were included in the normal statistics for the first time following the contest. The Beach continue their home stand with CS Northridge for a three-game series starting this Friday at 6:30 p.m. |
