Utility Player Pitches Five Strong Innings Has Two Hits in Rout

IRVINE, CA-- Shane Peterson (1-1) pitched five strong innings and had two hits at the plate leading No. 20-ranked Long Beach State (14-11, 1-2 Big West) to a 12-4 win in the final game of the three-game series. Peterson, after giving up two home runs in the first, and a single to lead off the first, retired the next 10 in a row en route to his longest career outing.

Peterson allowed just four hits as the youngsters were in full effect on Sunday, as freshman Taylor Krick drove in four with a three-run home run, and freshman TJ Mittelstaedt in his first start in right field reached base safely six times with four walks, a single and a double. Freshman Steve Tinoco added three hits and senior Robert Perry had a double and a solo home run as part of a 14-hit attack.

The Beach broke open the game in the fifth, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six times. Krick's three-run homer made it 8-4. Krick actually broke an early 2-2 tie in the fourth with an RBI groundout.

Taylor Holiday had two home runs in the game, a solo shot in the first for UCI, who built an early 2-1 lead and a two-run homer in the seventh to make it 9-4. LBSU tacked on three runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach at 12-4.

The Dirtbags begin a 12-game homestand starting on Thursday with Oral Roberts for a three-game Easter series.
