LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 4-ranked San Diego State (14-4, 5-2 MPSF) used five goals from Jenna Schuster and another four from Anna Gonzales to easily get by Long Beach State (6-8, 2-4 MPSF) 10-3 on Thursday afternoon. The 49ers, playing without two starters currently playing on the Brazilian National Team in the Fina World Championships, were led by two goals from Dayna Wawrzynski. The early going was close, as the Aztecs led just 2-1 on two Schuster goals by the 3:59 mark in the first and 3-1 at the 7:22 mark on Schuster's third goal of the afternoon in the second period. Freshman Branwyn Lee closed to within 3-2 on a 2-meter shot at 7:01 and momentum was starting to go to the 49ers favor following a blocked penalty shot by goalie Kim Hayes at 6:37. But following the save, SDSU would respond with three-straight goals before the break to lead 6-2 and extend it to 9-2 by the end of the third period. The 49ers have a busy week, playing four times, hosting Brown and UC Davis on Monday and Tuesday, traveling to Loyola Marymount on Thursday and heading to USC on Saturday. |
