49ers Hold On For Non-Conference Win
In addition to Lotman's offensive output on .438 hitting, Dean Bittner had 16 kills while Teddy Liles chipped in eight. Dan Alexander notched a career-high four service aces and Tyler Caldwell posted a match-high 16 digs. The 49ers hit .219 on the evening as Conor Eaton dished out 63 assists. C.J. Macias led the Mastodons with 21 kills, and IPFW out-blocked the 49ers 17.0 to 13.5 in the losing effort. Long Beach State jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in game one after a kill by Daniel Fabry. IPFW fought back and eventually tied the game at 19-19 after a kill by Colin Lundeen, but LBSU wouldn't let up as they went on an 11-5 run capped by a Mastodon hitting error to close out the set. IPFW hit .273 in game one while the 49ers hit .270, led by Lotman's six kills on .417 hitting. The two teams battled back and forth in game two until LBSU went on a 7-3 run capped by a Lotman kill to take a 21-17 lead. The 49ers kept the momentum as they went up 29-21 after a hitting error by Brock Ullrich. The Mastodons were able to hold off three game points but couldn't overcome the deficit as a kill by Lotman ended the set. LBSU out-hit IPFW .267 to .103 in the second set. Long Beach State held an early 11-7 lead in game three but the Mastodons wouldn't give up as they ran away with the 30-26 win. IPFW used a 12-2 run to take a 21-14 lead after a hitting error by Tommy Pestolesi. The 49ers pulled within four (24-20) after a Bittner kill, but IPFW was able to hold on as a block by Jerrod Quillen and Graydon Ainsworth ended the set. The Mastodons hit .156 while holding the 49ers to a .029 clip. IPFW carried the momentum into game four as they took an early 17-9 lead after an ace by Macias. The 49ers pulled within three (19-16) after an attack error by Vitor Oliviera, but the Mastodons went on to a 29-24 lead with a 49er service error. LBSU survived three game points, but couldn't pull off the comeback as a kill by Macias ended the set, forcing a decisive fifth game. The 49ers went up 8-5 after a kill by Liles and held on for the 15-12 game five victory. LBSU was much more efficient offensively as they hit .318. In the first game of the evening, the NAIA's top-ranked team Cal Baptist knocked off No. 6-ranked Penn State 30-27, 30-23, 30-25. Donald Baliaba led the Lancers with 19 kills, four service aces, and an impressive .571 hitting percentage, while Corey Spence chipped in six kills and 11 digs. Eric Plunkett guided the Cal Baptist offense to a .395 clip with 37 assists.
