49ers Outlast Penn State
LONG BEACH, CA -- Five 49ers hit double-digits in kills as Long Beach State came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Penn State 30-19, 27-30, 28-30, 30-26, 15-13 at the Active Ankle/Long Beach Guesthouse Classic on Saturday evening in the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers extended their win streak to four matches and improved to 11-9 on the season, while the Nittany Lions fell to 12-5. Paul Lotman notched his fourth double-double of the year with 21 kills and 11 digs, to go along with seven blocks as he earned tournament MVP honors. Fletcher Anderson tallied a career-high 16 kills on .333 hitting, and Dean Bittner also chipped in 16 kills. Teddy Liles posted 13 kills against only one error for a .600 clip, while Dan Alexander had 14 kills on .706 hitting, as both were named to the all-tournament team. Conor Eaton dished out 66 assists as LBSU hit .375 on the evening. The 49ers out-blocked the Nittany Lions 13.0 to 10.5, led by Alexander's eight blocks. Matt Anderson led Penn State with 25 kills in the losing effort. LBSU produced a huge run mid-way through game one to cruise to a 30-19 victory. Penn State held an early 8-5 lead after a kill by Matt Anderson, but the 49ers proceeded to go on a 15-2 run capped by a solo block from Dan Alexander to put LBSU up 23-12. The 49ers never looked back as a Lotman kill ended the set. LBSU hit .419 in the first set, while holding the Nittany Lions to a .152 clip. The 49ers committed 10 service errors in game two as Penn State pulled out the 30-27 win. LBSU led 8-7 after a kill by Alexander, but Penn State pushed forward taking a 15-13 lead after a 49er service error, and the Nittany Lions never trailed the rest of the way as an attack error by Lotman ended the set. Penn State hit .320 to the 49ers .312. The Nittany Lions pulled out another close one as they won game three 30-28. Penn State jumped out to a 10-6 lead after a kill by Matt Anderson, but the 49ers tied it up at 13-13 with a Bittner kill. The Nittany Lions used a late 6-2 run to go up 29-25 before the 49ers staged a 3-0 run of their own capped by a Lotman kill to pull within one (29-28), but Penn State was able to hold on as an Anderson kill gave them the two-point victory. Penn State out-hit LBSU .263 to .222 in game three. The 49ers stayed alive as they forced a decisive fifth game with a 30-26 game four victory. LBSU held an early 14-10 lead following a kill by Lotman and appeared to be on their way to a convincing win, but Penn State battled back as they pulled within three (29-26) before Fletcher Anderson ended the set with a kill down the line. The 49ers improved their hitting percentage to .464 and held the Nittany Lions to a .200 clip. Penn State led 8-7 as the teams switched sides in game five, but it was the 49ers who came up with the late run as they earned the 15-13 win.
